Glasgow (Glasgow Express) October 21, 2026 – Glasgow city centre is set to introduce three dedicated Night Bus Hubs from this Friday, 23 October, in an effort to streamline late-night journeys for shift workers and revellers whilst bolstering the local night-time economy. The scheme, which will operate across 10 established night bus routes between midnight and 4am on Friday and Saturday nights, aims to promote bus travel as a primary late-night transit option and alleviate operational pressure on local taxis and private hire vehicles.

The designated hubs are located at prominent city centre points: Sauchiehall Street at The Garage, Hope Street at Watt Brothers, and the southern end of Union Street. Operating from existing bus stop locations, each site will feature distinct visual branding, integrated CCTV coverage, and dedicated on-street marshals. The marshalling initiative will run as a one-year pilot scheme jointly funded by Glasgow City Council and Let’s Go Glasgow, the city centre’s Business Improvement District (BID). Officials confirmed that all standard stops along the ten routes will remain fully operational, ensuring no alteration to existing service patterns for regular passengers.

How Will the New Night Bus Hubs Support Glasgow’s Night-Time Economy?

The initiative has been developed collaboratively by the Glasgow City Centre Taskforce, bringing together municipal leaders, business representative groups, and transport operators including First Bus and McGill’s Group.

As reported by Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for City Centre Recovery and Transport at Glasgow City Council, the initiative represents a strategic step forward for city transport infrastructure. Councillor Angus Millar stated that

“Enhancing night-time transport options are an important part of supporting Glasgow’s night-time economy, and the city centre’s new Night Bus Hubs will help people enjoying a night out or working late to confidently plan their journey and get home more easily. This initiative will improve the night bus offer in the city and help make night buses an easier and more attractive option for the many people who enjoy a night out in the city centre or work in the pubs, clubs, restaurants and other businesses there.”

Representing the business community, Sean Murray, Chief Executive of Let’s Go Glasgow BID, emphasised the necessity of reliable transport to support commercial trade after dark. As reported by Sean Murray,

“A city centre that feels safe, welcoming and vibrant after dark is good for everyone. This is fundamental to a thriving night-time economy. For the businesses we represent, making sure people can enjoy Glasgow with confidence, and get home easily at the end of the night, really matters. That’s why Let’s Go Glasgow is supporting the wardens at the new Night Bus Hubs. Having visible, welcoming staff on the ground, alongside clear branding, will make the hubs easy to find and simple to use, taking the uncertainty out of the journey home. Better late-night transport is something our businesses have told us matters to them. By supporting the wardens, we’re responding directly to that need: helping people feel confident staying longer and enjoying more of Glasgow, while supporting the businesses and people that keep our city centre vibrant after dark.”

What Are Transport Operators Saying About Fares and Integration?

Public transport providers serving the Greater Glasgow area have confirmed their operational alignment with the new hub setup, highlighting fare caps and reciprocal ticketing arrangements designed to improve overall passenger access.

As reported by Ryan Sorley, Commercial Manager of First Bus in Glasgow, the new physical infrastructure will significantly enhance the customer journey. Ryan Sorley stated that

“The Night Bus Hubs are a brilliant addition to the city network. Welcoming features and on-street advice will further enhance the experience for customers and make buses the obvious choice for traveling home after a late night in the city. Through working together in the Glasgow Bus Partnership, we are also supporting the hubs and simpler travel with ticket acceptance among other operators. Our night services are included in the £2 fare cap and I would remind concessionary pass holders and those aged under 22 that they can travel free at all times of the day.”

Adding to these comments, Graeme McFarlan, Commercial Director at McGill’s Group, noted the economic and practical advantages for late-night passengers and hospitality employees. As reported by Graeme McFarlan,

“We welcome Glasgow’s new Night Bus Hubs, which will make it easier for people to find their bus and plan their journey home. Clearly signposted stops, with lighting and CCTV coverage, will help passengers feel more confident about using night buses and support the businesses and workers who keep Glasgow’s night-time economy moving. With the £2 fare cap now covering McGill’s NightBus services, taking the bus home after a night out or a late shift is even more attractive. The hubs will help raise awareness of the services available, while the lower fare makes them even better value for money. Together, these improvements give people more reason to come to Glasgow city centre and then choose the bus for their journey home.”

Background of the Glasgow Night Bus Infrastructure Development

The establishment of the Night Bus Hubs follows extended discussions between local authority representatives, commercial operators, and hospitality leaders regarding late-night transport provision in Glasgow city centre. Over recent years, post-midnight transport availability in major Scottish urban centres has faced scrutiny, particularly concerning taxi availability during peak weekend hours and the perceived safety of passengers waiting in unmarshalled areas.

The City Centre Taskforce was established to address urban recovery, public safety, and economic vitality across Glasgow’s commercial core. A primary focus of the taskforce has been finding multi-agency solutions to ensure that hospitality staff, shift workers, and evening visitors possess accessible, affordable, and safe routes out of the city centre after midnight.

Previous trial measures and business feedback indicated that clear signage, active security or marshalling, and predictable departure points significantly increase public willingness to utilise scheduled bus services over private hire options. Furthermore, the inclusion of night routes within national concessionary travel frameworks—such as free travel schemes for under-22s and older adults, alongside local government fare-capping policies—has established the financial framework necessary to make commercial night bus operations sustainable. The launch of the three hub locations on Sauchiehall Street, Hope Street, and Union Street represents a formalized pilot model intended to consolidate these operational lessons into a single, structured system.

Prediction: Impact on Late-Night Visitors, Hospitality Workers, and Local Businesses

The introduction of dedicated Night Bus Hubs is anticipated to directly affect several key groups operating within or visiting Glasgow city centre:

  • Night-time Visitors and Patrons: The availability of well-lit, CCTV-monitored, and marshalled hubs will likely increase public confidence regarding personal safety when travelling late at night. Clear branding and centralized departure points remove ambiguity about where to board, encouraging patrons to remain in the city centre longer without the anxiety of securing scarce late-night taxis.
  • Hospitality and Night-Time Economy Workers: Employees working late shifts in bars, restaurants, clubs, and venue security stand to benefit from structured, affordable transport options. The combination of the £2 fare cap, under-22 free travel passes, and physical safety wardens reduces commuting costs and risks for night-shift staff leaving work between midnight and 4am.
  • City Centre Businesses and Operators: Venue owners and retail stakeholders are expected to see a positive economic spillover as improved late-night connectivity boosts footfall and dwell time. By easing the demand bottleneck on private hires and black cabs during peak closing hours, the hubs help ensure a smoother, safer dispersal of crowds from key entertainment zones like Sauchiehall Street.
