Glasgow LGBT Bookshop Surpasses £14k After Attack in Govanhill 2026

Key Points

  • Category Is Books, a queer bookseller operating in the Govanhill region of Glasgow, experienced a vandal act on one of its storefront windows, which had been deliberately shattered.
  • The targeted window bore the slogan “Trans Liberation Now,” whereby the part with the word “TRANS” was especially destroyed, thus making the owners understand that it was a transphobic action.
  • The shop noted an increase in violations in the neighborhood in recent months, characterized by spitting, intimidation, fascism, and aggression.
  • After the occurrence of the act, Category Is Books initiated a GoFundMe page with an initial goal of raising £10,000 for installing security shutters.
  • In a short while, they achieved more than their goal, having managed to raise £14,000 within 12 hours.
  • The owners, Bug and Fin, acknowledged that they were completely overwhelmed by the amount of generosity, solidarity, and community support.

Glasgow (Glasgow Express) September 12, 2026 – An independent queer bookshop in Scotland’s largest city has spoken of being completely overwhelmed by public backing after falling victim to a targeted vandalism incident.

As reported by Glasgow Live, a prominent Glasgow LGBT+ bookshop suffered a deliberate act of vandalism that left its storefront window smashed. The premises, known as Category Is Books and situated in the Govanhill area on Allison Street, features a front display incorporating the phrase “Trans Liberation Now”. According to the shop’s owners, the destruction specifically focused on the section of the window painted with the word “TRANS,” leaving little doubt about the nature of the crime.

As reported by the Glasgow Times, owners Bug and Fin explained via their fundraising page that the incident was far from an isolated occurrence. They stated, as noted by the Glasgow Times:

“The word ‘Trans’ had been directly targeted, making the perpetrator’s transphobic intentions clear as day. We have also become increasingly aware of an escalation in violations and intimidation from fascists in our neighbourhood. After months of experiencing regular spitting and other forms of aggression, we can no longer tolerate the increasing ways in which our space is being threatened.”

How Did the Community Respond to the Attack?

As reported by STV News, the independent bookshop—which has served the local community for over eight years without exterior shutters—promptly launched an online crowdfunding initiative to cover the expenses of installing robust security roller shutters. Although the initial financial goal was set at £10,000 to account for estimated installation costs and associated expenses, the response from the public exceeded all projections.

As reported by STV News, the GoFundMe campaign successfully surpassed its £10,000 objective within a mere 12 hours, eventually soaring past £14,000. Commenting on the immense financial and emotional backing, the owners released a statement. As reported by STV News, Category Is Books stated:

“We are completely blown away by the generosity and solidarity that has come our way. Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared the fundraiser and held us in the past week.”

The statement continued, detailing the significance of the enterprise:

“Over the past eight years, Category Is Books has grown beyond being just a bookshop. It has become an active site of queer organising, mutual aid and community. We genuinely appreciate knowing that this space matters to so many of you, and that we’re not alone in wanting to protect it.”

Regarding surplus funds gathered beyond the initial target, the owners confirmed plans for transparent distribution. As reported by STV News, the shop noted:

“For transparency, we’ll leave the fundraiser open until tomorrow, 10am. Given the time it will take to get a formal quote, we worked with £10k as an estimated cost for the shutters and associated expenses. Any contribution beyond this amount will help us with covering unexpected costs that may come up. If there are funds remaining after everything is covered, we’ll redistribute them to other fundraisers and queer groups that could use the support.”

What Changes Will Happen to the Shop Front?

While the installation of security shutters has now been deemed a necessary safety precaution, the proprietors acknowledged a sense of loss regarding the visibility of their windows. Historically, the shop used its front glass panels as a canvas for hand-painted quotes, community event schedules, and expressions of local solidarity.

Reflecting on this aesthetic shift, the owners shared their perspective, noting:

“From hand-painted quotes that ground us to lists of monthly community events, our window displays have offered a subtle way of sharing and make visible what matters to us and what is happening around us. We’re excited to imagine what this change might make possible and how the shutters will eventually become an extension of the shop. We are genuinely excited to imagine it as a new canvas we can paint on together, opening up possibilities for how the shop continues to speak out into the street.”

Background of the Particular Development

Category Is Books was established on Allison Street in Glasgow’s Southside by partners Bug and Fin, becoming one of only two dedicated LGBTQIA+ bookshops in Scotland. Over nearly a decade of operation, the space has functioned not merely as a retail store selling queer literature, graphic novels, zines, and local art, but as a vital community hub hosting book clubs, support groups, and activist gatherings. In recent years, independent queer spaces across the United Kingdom have faced growing scrutiny, protests, and security threats amid heightened public debates regarding transgender rights and gender-critical discourse. This hostile sociopolitical climate has occasionally manifested in localized street-level harassment, forcing independent cultural hubs to reconsider their physical safety measures against targeted vandalism and intimidation.

This development highlights an ongoing security vulnerability for independent cultural and minority-focused spaces across urban centers, demonstrating how localized hostility can unexpectedly galvanize broader public solidarity. For the queer community, local patrons, and independent business owners, the rapid and overwhelming success of the crowdfunding campaign signals a strong collective defense mechanism against targeted intimidation, ensuring that essential community safe spaces can secure physical reinforcement. However, the necessity to install protective steel shutters also points toward a sobering operational reality: minority-serving spaces may need to allocate increasing resources toward physical fortifications and security infrastructure. This shift risks altering the welcoming, open-door aesthetic that defines neighborhood bookshops, potentially chilling open community engagement while simultaneously strengthening internal networks of mutual aid and resilience against future acts of bias.
