POZNAŃ (Glasgow Express) September 4, 2026 — Former Celtic defender Yuki Kobayashi scored a spectacular 30-yard goal for Jagiellonia Białystok, though his effort was ultimately not enough to prevent a narrow 2-1 defeat against league leaders Lech Poznań.

As reported by Matthew Lindsay of the Herald Scotland, Kobayashi produced a moment of individual brilliance late in the first half to temporarily bring his side level. The Japanese centre-back received the ball just inside the opposition half, advanced forward without pressure from the opposition defense, and unleashed a left-footed strike that flew directly into the top corner.

The goal came in response to Pablo Rodríguez’s opening strike for Lech Poznań in the 43rd minute. Kobayashi’s effort, scored in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time, sent both teams into the halftime interval tied at 1-1.

Despite Jagiellonia Białystok pushing the league leaders close throughout the match, Michał Gurgul scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute to secure all three points for the home side.

According to coverage from Herald Scotland, this goal represents only the fifth senior strike of Kobayashi’s career. Before this fixture, the 26-year-old defender had registered two goals for Yokohama FC, one for Vissel Kobe, and one previous goal for Jagiellonia Białystok during the preceding campaign. Kobayashi had previously featured in Jagiellonia’s two-legged victory over Rangers in Europa League qualifying earlier in the season before the club advanced to the competition’s league phase.

What is the background of this development?

Yuki Kobayashi joined Celtic in January 2023 from J1 League side Vissel Kobe. During his tenure at Celtic Park, the defender logged five appearances in the Scottish Premiership and two in the Scottish Cup, but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in the first team.

In August 2024, Kobayashi completed a permanent transfer to Portuguese side Portimonense, where he featured in 25 matches during the 2024/25 Liga Portugal 2 season.

Following his spell in Portugal, he transferred to Polish Ekstraklasa outfit Jagiellonia Białystok in July 2025 on a three-year contract running through June 2028. Since joining the Polish club, Kobayashi has established himself within the defensive rotation across domestic league fixtures and European qualifying rounds.

How will this development affect Jagiellonia Białystok and Scottish football observers?

For Jagiellonia Białystok, Kobayashi’s long-range goal demonstrates an added threat from deep during offensive transitions, giving opposing defenses another variable to account for when playing a low defensive block. However, the defeat keeps Jagiellonia trailing the top positions in the Ekstraklasa standings, placing greater emphasis on securing results in upcoming domestic fixtures to maintain pace with the league leaders.

For supporters and media following Scottish football, Kobayashi’s high-profile goal offers a notable update on a former Celtic player competing in European domestic leagues. His continued role in Jagiellonia’s squad—particularly following their European tie against Rangers—keeps his career trajectory relevant to observers of Scottish club performance in continental competition.
