Key Points

  • Glasgow crime boss Steven Lyons reportedly arrested in Bali following deportation from Qatar.
  • Police Scotland confirmed a Scottish man, understood to be Lyons, was detained on the Indonesian island.
  • The force is working closely with partner agencies across Europe, including Spain’s Guardia Civil.
  • Arrest follows dawn raids on March 27, 2026, in Scotland and Spain, resulting in 13 arrests linked to organised crime.

  • Investigation began in May 2024 at Eurojust with Europol support; not linked to ongoing Scottish gangland feud.
  • Insider source told Daily Record that Lyons fled to Bali after expulsions from Dubai, Bahrain, and Qatar in recent months to stay near family in Dubai.

This development follows coordinated dawn raids across Scotland and Spain on March 27, leading to 13 arrests in a major operation against organised crime.

The two-year probe targeted the Lyons syndicate, accused of large-scale drug trafficking and money laundering.

Who is Steven Lyons?

Steven Lyons, aged around 45, is a key figure in Scotland’s underworld, having taken over the Lyons crime group from his father, Eddie Lyons Snr.

The syndicate is described by STV News as Scotland’s dominant crime group, with senior figures based in Spain and the UAE.

As reported by BBC Scotland News, Lyons was previously apprehended in Dubai last September alongside Ross McGill, a former Rangers ultras member, Stephen Jamieson, and Steven Larwood.

McGill had been a significant player in last year’s gang conflict sparking violence across Scotland.

Earlier this month, on March 3, 2026, reports emerged of Lyons and McGill being detained in Bahrain five months after their Dubai release, though Scottish officers were informed post media coverage.

What Triggered the Bali Arrest?

According to Glasgow Live, Lyons had been deported from Qatar, with the arrest reported on March 28 morning.

An insider explained to Stephen Breen of the Daily Record:

“Steven went there to get his head together after being chucked out of Qatar and weigh up his options after he was expelled from Dubai, Bahrain and Qatar in the last six months. He was hoping to get somewhere in the Middle East to take him in so he could be close to his family in Dubai.”

The source continued:

“After the arrests yesterday he’d have been very nervous. That’s him been arrested four times but this feels very different and could be the end of his criminal enterprise.”

BBC Scotland News reports that Lyons was detained in Bali by local authorities acting on behalf of Spain’s Guardia Civil.

This aligns with STV News understanding that the arrest followed the two-year serious organised crime investigation.

What Were the Dawn Raids?

Police in Scotland and Spain executed simultaneous pre-dawn raids on Friday, March 27, 2026.

In Scotland, addresses in Glasgow, Bellshill, Cumbernauld, Gartcosh, Caldercruix, Coatbridge, and East Whitburn were targeted, yielding eight arrests.

Spain’s Guardia Civil raided sites there, arresting five more, for a total of 13.

The operation, coordinated with the UK National Crime Agency (NCA), focused on Lyons syndicate affiliates.

As per BBC, it examined high-level connections to drug trafficking and money laundering, unrelated to last year’s central Scotland gang conflict or May 2025 killings of Lyons members Eddie Lyons Jr. and Ross Monaghan on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Monaghan had been acquitted in the 2010 murder of enforcer ‘Fat Gil’.

What Did Police Scotland Say?

A Police Scotland spokesperson stated:

“We are aware of the arrest of a Scottish nominal in Bali and we are working closely with European partners.”

STV News reports the force confirmed on Saturday that a Scottish man, understood to be Lyons, was arrested in Bali, coordinating with European agencies.

This matches Glasgow Live’s coverage of the force’s awareness and partnerships.

What is the Scale of the Investigation?

The probe began in May 2024 at Eurojust, supported by Europol, who deployed officers to Spain and Scotland.

Eurojust confirmed the Lyons group ran a prolific network transporting large quantities of drugs, including hundreds of kilograms of cocaine, into Scotland.

Profits funded an international money laundering operation with several million euros reinvested into crime.

Authorities analysed large datasets over two years leading to the March 27 arrests.

BBC notes the operation’s aim at the leading Scottish criminal organisation.

Why Did Lyons Flee the Middle East?

The Daily Record insider highlighted Lyons’ expulsions from Dubai, Bahrain, and Qatar over six months, prompting his Bali move for regrouping near Dubai-based family.

After the raids, nervousness mounted, marking his fourth arrest but potentially ending his empire.

Previous Gulf detentions, like Bahrain in early March, complicated verification amid regional conflicts.

How Does This Fit Broader Gang Context?

The raids are not linked to Scotland’s ongoing gangland feud, per investigators.

Underworld sources claim ex-Lyons lieutenant Steven Gordon switched to rivals the Daniel clan, now facing a £30k bounty.

Gordon, a Possil native familiar with both families, knew the risks.

Turkish assets were seized in a related international crackdown.

What Happens Next?

Police Scotland continues liaising with European partners, potentially leading to extradition.

Eurojust’s involvement suggests ongoing coordination for prosecutions.

The operation’s success could dismantle key syndicate elements, though challenges persist in global crime networks.

This arrest caps a series of setbacks for Lyons, from Dubai to Bali, amid intensified international pressure.
